Storing HC and HFO

When you are dealing with flammable refrigerants it is important you need to take extra precautions when storing them.

You need to assess the following risks when determining a safe location to store these refrigerants

  • Explosion Hazards
  • Total quantities of flammable materials being stored
  • Area which is set aside for the separate storage of flammable substances
  • Drainage system near storage area
  • Types of refrigerants and characteristics on the packaging

Once you have decided on a place to store a flammable HC or HFO, you will need to maintain the space to reduce accidents when dealing with these substances to avoid possible hazards, this includes

  • Inspecting the storing containers regularly for any signs of damage, rust, corrosion, and deterioration of the container
  • Checking for leaks
  • Not allowing smoking anywhere near the storage area
  • Establishing a plan to evacuate the area of storage incase of an emergency
  • Instruct all employees to know the location and proper information for where these are stored in case of emergency. Having this information of when it is store, the quantity of the hazardous materials will be essential in case of an emergency

When you are dealing with damaged storage or equipment make sure that you first

  • wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) this can include safety goggles and appropriate clothing
  • read the safety manual data sheet for dealing with any hazards associated with the refrigerant
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergency

Moving the damaged storage or equipment away to a designated area that is far away from the main area which ensure compliance with the rules for dealing hazardous substances
