Membership Categories
MOPIA is a multi-stakeholder membership organization. We have over 5,000 members generally from within Manitoba. There are three levels of membership: 1) certificate holder ($25); 2) subscribing member ($35) and; 3) steward or voting member ($45). Steward members are able to vote on corporate business and are eligible to become members on our Board of Directors and ExCom.

2012-2013 Board of Directors Profile
George Kurowski, was an instructor at Red River College within the Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Program since 1995. He now works with a leading Winnipeg-based Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Design Company. George has been a member with RSES since 1974, and is certified as a Commercial Refrigeration Specialist, Commercial Air Conditioning Specialist, and Controls Specialist. An ASHRAE member since 1982, George has served as Manitoba Chapter Past President (1999-2000), and presently serves on the Board of Directors for the Manitoba Chapter of HRAI. He has been involved with MOPIA since 1995, currently serving as Chair for 2010-2012. Recent affiliations include the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR) which will be helping North American Industries transition to technologies that make use of Carbon Dioxide, Ammonia, and Hydrocarbon-based Refrigerants. He has been a member of BEMM since 2001.
Meghan Johnson Meghan Johnson is a graduate of the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Environmental Science. She has a background in Environment and Health. She was recently hired at Bristol Aerospace as their Environmental Operations Coordinator. She is in charge of compliance with environmental regulations (federal and provincial) and the environmental management system using ISO 14001 standards for the Winnipeg facility as well as the Rockwood propellant plant. She is also part of Bristol’s Health and Safety Team as well as their Emergency Response Team.

Michael Blackey is a past Chair of MOPIA and has been instrumental in encouraging a strong Manitoba presence of program compliance and awareness. He is active on the Automotive Trades Association (ATA), Manitoba Motor Dealers Association (MMDA) and other mobile sector committees. Michael has been a MOPIA representative at the United Nations, Montreal Protocol Meetings and is a key advisor on MOPIA’s ExCom.
Kurtis Calder has been a MOPIA director for 5 years and is currently the Health and Safety Manager for Hazco Environmental Services for Central Canada. Hazco performs many construction and demolition projects and ODS management is a key component to regulatory affairs, employee health and impact on the environment. Previously, Mr. Calder was the Environmental Manager for Gerdau Ameristeel Manitoba and represented MOPIA interests through metal recovery and processing. He holds a BSc. in Environmental Planning, a Masters in Environmental Management as well as an Environmental Professional (EP) designation.

Don Thomson is Fire Marshall with Manitoba Hydro and a long time MOPIA volunteer. He has held many positions within our organization and has led MOPIA to Montreal Protocol Meetings in various locations including Rome, Montreal and Geneva. Don is a Canadian member of the Halons Technical Options Committee (HTOC), an advisory wing of the UNEP Technical Economic and Assessment Panels.
